Meeting recap: NIRO Annual Meeting 2024
The 2024 NIRO annual meeting was held November 7th at Quality Airport Hotel Gardermoen, attracting over 80 participants from diverse scientific fields, including medical physicists, oncologists, radiation therapists, radiation biologists, and data scientists. The program featured two distinguished international keynote speakers: Geoff Higgins from the University of Oxford held an inspiring talk about Atovaquone as a hypoxia modifier and its way from compound screen to clinical trials. Karin Haustermans from KU Leuven shared insights and visions for advancing proton therapy in Europe. Other invited speakers highlighted cutting-edge topics such as the combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy, applications of artificial intelligence, innovative approaches like FLASH and spatially fractionated radiotherapy, and advancements in proton therapy. The Nordic Radiotherapy Diploma Program (NORTHDIP) Initiative and the newly formed National expert group for radiation therapy research (NERR) were also presented during the event. The program further included oral presentations based on abstracts, flash poster presentations, a poster session and valuable networking opportunities. Altogether, the meeting showcased the diverse research within the field of radiation therapy that is going on in our region, and underlined NIRO's commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation across disciplines in radiation oncology.
